New standard will make e-commerce more secure

19:29 20th July 2010

Security surrounding e-commerce transactions will be boosted by internet root servers being made more secure due to the addition of domain name system security extensions (DNSSEC).

The DNSSEC means it is more likely that when an e-commerce user has a webpage returned to them, it is the right one rather than a replica of the correct page.

Further secure data is added to the domain name through the use of DNSSEC, resulting in a match to a webpage which is less likely to have been tampered with.

The aim is to protect users of e-commerce sites from false webpages or imitation banking log-in pages, which is usually where e-commerce users fail prey to hackers.

"DNSSEC is designed to protect the DNS [domain name system] from 'man in the middle' and cache poisoning attacks, which can occur when hackers corrupt DNS data stored on recursive servers to redirect queries to malicious sites," said Ken Silva, senior vice president and chief technology officer at VeriSign.

Recently, it was suggested that managed hosting services based on cloud computing could be beneficial to e-commerce merchants.

Brad Gyger, cloud computing expert, told Practical Ecommerce that he believes web-based shopping facilities provide an "ideal space" for hosting because of the "cynical nature" of the sector.ADNFCR-2032-ID-19898373-ADNFCR
