Online retailers can benefit from managed hosting

Managed hosting services based on cloud computing can be of benefit to online retailers, according to an industry expert.

Brad Gyger, cloud computing expert, told Practical Ecommerce that he believes web-based shopping facilities provide an "ideal space" for hosting. This is due to the "cynical nature" of the sector, he explained.

According to Mr Gyger, additional capacity is required by retailers in order to meet demand during busy periods.

As managed hosting can easily offer retailers this capacity, it is an ideal solution.

Mr Gyger explained: "For example, an electronics e-tailer might see a traffic increase of two to three times during November and December from holiday shoppers."

Cloud computing enables the company to add "just enough resources for those six to eight weeks to meet the increased traffic demands".

Writing for The Next Web, James Hicks recently said that that the issue of data protection is no longer a cause for major concern for cloud-based services.

Meanwhile, Gartner has issued a document containing six basic rights that cloud computing providers should provide their customers with - including promises to adequately secure data and stick to service level agreements.
