12:09 9th June 2010
Bing, Microsoft's search engine, has made gains in the US market and has maintained its grip internationally too, which could have an impact upon the online marketing strategies North West e-commerce firms adopt.
New figures released by Ars Technica have shown that Bing, which started in June 2009, had a 7.27 per cent market share in the US, which had risen to 9.92 per cent in April this year.
Combined with Yahoo's share, which is almost 16 per cent, the two search engines pose a considerable threat to Google in the US, which is probably the engine most e-commerce firms in the UK use.
Worldwide, however, Google still has a market share of around 84 per cent.
Recent research from eConsultancy and Guava has shown that UK companies have boosted their investment in paid search and search engine optimisation this year.
As the country has begun to emerge from the economic downturn, 60 per cent of firms have said they plan to increase spending on search online marketing channels over the coming year.
In terms of paid search online marketing, 52 per cent of companies intend to raise their budgets over the next 12 months compared with only 45 per cent in 2009.
