Businesses in Lancashire could be losing sales due to poor website design, according to new research.
The study by Hostway and Zeus Technology found that those involved in online retail could be losing up to £5.65 billion per year, as many consumers choose to abandon transactions due to the poor performance of sites.
Over 80 per cent of consumers said they would be dissuaded from buying goods if a website performed badly, which highlights the importance of having solid development plans in place.
The biggest complaint was found to be that webpages take too long to load, while other issues highlighted include poor navigation and bad links.
Graham Moore, e-retail specialist at Zeus Technology, said sites need to be able to cope with large visitor numbers and multimedia content.
He added: "The latest traffic management solutions can help ensure that retailers are able to provide the best possible online experience, even allowing them to inspect and route traffic based on visitor type and profile."
Recent research by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising revealed that the rollout of universal broadband in the UK could boost online retail services.
