Companies in Lancashire need to recognise that domain names can play a key role in online marketing efforts, according to an expert.
Rhodri Marsden of the Independent's Cyberclinic column has stated that memorable website addresses are "powerful marketing weapons" and claimed firms need to follow a range of guidelines when selecting them.
Writing for the newspaper, he stated that domains have to be pronounceable and not include hyphens or numbers, as these issues could impact on whether consumers can remember them.
In addition, businesses should ensure they do not make them too long, but warned firms should be cautious if thinking about making a high bid as other issues such as optimisation can impact on the success of an address.
He explained: "In the unlikely scenario that you were thinking of blowing £200,000 on Cleaning.com this week, there are undoubtedly far better ways of using that money to achieve your dream of bestriding the web."
Recent figures published by VeriSign revealed that over 192 million domain names have been registered for use across the globe, with 11 million taking place during the fourth quarter of 2009.
