The amount of money spent through online retail services reached £4.3 billion during January, new research has revealed.
According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, like-for-like growth in the sector rose by five per cent from figures recorded in January 2009.
In news which may interest companies in Lancashire, monthly growth fell by 22 per cent from December, although this is in line with the usual trend of sales declining after the Christmas period.
Chris Webster, vice-president of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said it is important to factor in that December was a "strong month" for the industry.
"Last January, e-retailers' sales were buoyed up by heavy discounting and promotions that were necessary to sell stock left over from poor Christmas trading resulting from the impact of the recent move into recession," he added.
Recent figures published by Deutsche Card Services suggested that women are beginning to dominate online retail usage.
The study found that 61.35 per cent of all transactions in European online retail websites were carried out by women, which marks a significant change from 2007 when men were responsible for 56 per cent of sales.
