Companies in Lancashire with an online retail presence enjoyed a rise in sales over 2009, new figures have suggested.
The study by card fraud protection company Retail Decisions found that sales made over the internet were up 21 per cent from 2008 to £49.8 billion, with around 33 million people choosing to buy online during the 12-month period.
It was also revealed that the top performing days during the year were all in December, as a growing number of people prepared for the Christmas rush by purchasing goods online.
Carl Clump, chief executive of Retail Decisions, said 30 per cent of online sales took place during November and December.
"The top five busiest days of the year, all Mondays, took place over this period," he explained.
"Mondays are the busiest online shopping days due to consumers' price sensitivity. Shoppers spend their weekends shopping on the high street, finding the items they want to buy. Then they take to the internet to find the best deal they can for their chosen items."
Earlier this week, research from Actinic found that small and medium-sized enterprises with an online presence reported an average 51 per cent increase in order volumes over November and December.
