Brits 'up online retail spend in November'

11:18 21st December 2009

New figures have revealed that consumers in the UK increased the amount they spend through online retail channels during November.

The research by IMRG and Capgemini revealed that £5.3 billion was spent over the internet during the period, which was 25 per cent higher than the amount recorded in October.

In addition, the figure equated to an 11 per cent year-on-year rise, which may be linked to consumers holding out for seasonal price cuts at the end of 2009.

Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail at Capgemini UK, said: "November's results show a solid growth for online retail in the run up to Christmas.

"Given retailers' perceptions that consumers are holding out for November bargains, this would suggest a strong December for online."

The expert added that companies in Lancashire will have to "ensure that value is at the forefront of the Christmas message" if they want to succeed over the festive period.

Recent figures published by Verdict found that the amount of money spent online in the UK will rise from the current figure of £21 billion to over £60 billion by 2020.

Levels of spending on the high street are likely to fall over the period too, the study added.ADNFCR-2032-ID-19522518-ADNFCR
