Online commerce 'to increase twofold'

12:53 15th June 2009

Online commerce will increase twofold worldwide by 2012 as a growing number of firms capitalise on B2B transactions, one organisation has predicted.

A report entitled As the Economy Contracts the Digital Universe Expands, produced by technology company EMC, made the claim after studying volumes of digital information around the globe, reports The Paypers.

It found that with 600 million more people set to use the internet in the next four years, Web 2.0 technologies are well-positioned to weather the economic crisis.

Furthermore, with two-thirds of web surfers forecasted to use mobile devices "at least some of the time" the number of interactions between people online will grow by a factor of eight.

These combined aspects of predicted online behaviour will see the internet commerce industry record $13 trillion (£7.9 trillion) in revenue, the study concludes.

Earlier this month, Canadian web design Cost Effective Web Design revealed growth in the online promotion sector of the internet commerce industry.
