Online marketing 'popular despite recession'

11:04 10th June 2009

More companies are spending money on internet marketing despite the recession, research by a Canadian web design firm has shown.

The report, by Cost Effective Web Design, revealed that although many businesses were cutting costs because of pressures caused by the credit crunch, one area where spending had increased was online promotion.

More than three-quarters of the companies involved in the survey said they would increase the budget for internet marketing in 2009.

The majority - 86 per cent - of those questioned said their advertising budget over the next three years would be focussed on online promotion.

This is despite 52 per cent reducing budgets.

Paul Coulter, of Cost Effective Web Design, said the majority of companies involved agreed that using the internet was the "most cost effective way of promoting their business".

He added that the web often cost less than print and broadcast campaigns.

But it seems that the online marketing sector is not immune to the recession, as figures released yesterday from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) showed that ad revenues fell by five per cent in the first quarter of 2009.

This was the first dip in the market in more than six-years the IAB said.
